Fri 14 Sept
Shaping Young Performers: Cultivating Excellence in Pre-Tertiary Guitar Programs

5.00pm-7.00pm | UWA (inc refreshments) | $20 Standard or $60 (includes Full Weekend Festival ticket)

Brazilian guitarist Dr Josinaldo Costa is in demand as a solo artist and chamber musician, with performances across four continents. A dedicated educator, he was the Director of guitar studies at Servite High School, a private Catholic school in Los Angeles, California. During his tenure, Josinaldo developed a program that rivalled many tertiary guitar departments, both in student experience and standard of playing.

Under his guidance, the Servite classical guitar ensemble won two consecutive first prizes in the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America Ensemble Showcase competition. Although Servite’s program focused on ensemble playing, excellent solo playing was also cultivated at the school. Students were offered an educational experience that surpassed many University programs, including monthly guest recitals/masterclasses by artists such as Judicael Perroy, Vladimir Gorbach, Thibaut Garcia, and Duo Siqueira-Lima. Servite’s program became a reference in the USA, frequently used as a model for other programs in the country.

Based upon Dr Costa’s experience, this workshop will be a participative session for guitarists interested or currently involved in group guitar teaching. A strong focus will be given to teaching strategies designed to bring the best out of students and cultivate a culture of excellence.
