Derek Gripper Live
I’m delighted to announce the return to Fremantle of South African guitarist extraordinaire, Derek Gripper on Friday, February 21. Now at the pinnacle of an already stellar solo career with a busy international touring schedule, Derek Gripper is one of the world’s truly unique guitarists. Unique is a term that often gets bandied around, but in his case it’s salient. His transcriptions for guitar of the Malian kora (harp) tradition and specifically the music of its seminal figure, Toumani Diabate, have created a new language for classical guitar. And in his transcriptions and improvisations he continues to champion the music of African composer/performers such as Madosini, Ali Farka Toure, Salif Keita and Fanta Sacko and Amadu Bansang Jobarteh.
In his last performance at PS in August 2018, we received incredible feedback and given the sizeable proportion of guitarists in the audience, that says something!. Beyond the aforementioned African repertoire, Gripper is also a formidable composer and in more recent times he’s been exploring extended improvisation inspired by his long-time attraction to the music of Brazilian guitarist/composer, Egberto Gismonti, who paved the way for some the ‘extended’ techniques he now uses. And then to underline his impressive embrace, he has recently recorded an album of Bach sonatas and partitas. Derek Gripper is a true renaissance man of the guitar.
